W.P. Carey Operation Capacity

A Dreamscape Learn collaboration exploring operational capacity and supply chain management

📝 Student Team: 1 project manager, 3 developers, 3 artists

🏫 Advised by: Dr. Robert LiKamWa

Introduction

The Dreamscape Learn + WP Carey Immersive Classroom allows students to explore organizational capacity and supply chain management in factories, hospitals, and cafes. By placing students inside a real-world supply chain environment, this immersive classroom experience transforms complex logistics concepts into an interactive and engaging learning environment, providing students with deep insights compared to the traditional learning method.

Inventory management - cafe customer rush hour

Inventory management allows students to experience the impact of fluctuating demand in a busy/free cafe shop. Professors demonstrate revenue changes across different times of day, adjusting variables such as quantity of baristas, machines, and the time of day. Students can interact with the UI to adjust those variables as well to see real-time financial and efficiency outcomes based on their decisions.

Faculty operations - W.P. Cola production line

Students step into a virtual reality environment fitted with a production facility, where they can observe how production lines work to maintain efficiency. Professors can adjust each machine’s speed to create bottlenecks, which is difficult to recreate in real life without consequences at actual factories. Students are then asked to analyze the workflow disruptions and calculate the working-in-progress (WIP) buffers.

Hospital logistics - resource allocation and triage

Hospital logistics lets students explore the inner workings of hospitals such as patient flow and capacity challenges during different scenarios. Professors can highlight and explain how staffing and resource availability can affect the hospital efficiency.
